How to Survive Family at Holiday Time

Happiness is a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city.
- George Burns

As we start to approach the holiday season with Thanksgiving in the US on Thursday, I wanted to share some ways to manage the energies and relationship energies we will face.

Reader, even if you love your family, and they are “normal”, the season can still be draining. We can become unbalanced, and we don’t even realize it because we are having fun.

Why? A few reasons, but the biggest is because we are impacted by those we hang out with. The more you spend time with someone the more you think like they do. You pick up the energy they are carrying. And you start to replicate habits.

In fact, one study showed that if a friend becomes obese you have a 45% chance of gaining weight.

Think about it, Aunt Knows it all Nelly is telling you the world is coming to an end and there is nothing to be happy about. After a while of listening, you pick up her feelings and anxieties and begin to believe the story. Now you join her in cornering Cousin Optimistic Olivia to convince her the world is ending.

Instead of going down that path, there are some things you can do to ensure that you aren’t picking up other people’s stuff while enjoying the holidays.

Take Quiet Time Everyday

This will give you the space to reconnect to yourself. It doesn’t have to be a formal process. Even just sitting in silence will help. But if you do want something active to help, write a journal about what you think about everything you have experienced. Listening to someone and then stepping back and deciding what you think, without them around, is a great way to make sure you are being true to yourself.

You may want to sprinkle these quiet times throughout the day. Take five minutes in the morning, five at lunch and 10 before bed! This ensures that you are replenished on a regular basis.

Walk Away

If you find yourself in a situation that you are not comfortable with. You do not have to stay in a conversation that makes you uncomfortable.

You can do this, even if you are not a part of the conversation. Two family members arguing? Leave the room! If you struggle to do this, you can always excuse yourself to the bathroom. No one is going to stop you from doing this. Take five deep breaths and center yourself. When you head back out, find someone else to converse with.

Protect Your Energy Barriers

We all have an aura, which is the energy field around us. These can intertwine with other people, and we can pick up what others are feeling and carrying. This is especially true for empaths, but it does happen to everyone.

But you can protect yourself and your energy field, and it is simple! Before you head out for the day, take a moment to envision putting yourself into a white bubble that keeps all the negative energy out.

It might seem overly simple - but it works! Redo it throughout the day, especially if you are around lots of negative people. You can even ask your spirit guides to do this for you. A bonus step is after the white light around you, envision mirrors around you that point out. As negative energy comes to you it bounces off the mirrors and away from you. (I do these on a regular basis even outside the holidays!)

These three steps will help you enjoy and thrive during the holiday season!

Bonus Journal Prompts

Here are some journal prompts to help you through the season.

  • What part of my day can I add in 10 minutes of self-care?
  • How can I call back the personal power that I have given away? When back in family dynamics we quickly revert to old habits and roles. This takes away our power. How can you avoid reverting and keep your power? For example: practice compassion when interacting with your siblings.
  • How can I center myself while reacting in the moment? It is easy to get caught up in the moment with family. What can you do to remind yourself not to overreact?
  • What do I dislike about the holidays? How can I change this or better manage it?

Journaling prompt

Happy Monday Reader, this week’s journal prompt is to help us explore how we identify ourselves. Who am I if I am not ____? Start by picking an identity that we most align to. Then put that in the blank. From there, I would recommend you do a free write and let the answers just flow. Try not to answer from your mind, but your heart and intuition. Don’t forget to add things that aren’t roles, such as compassionate, loving and supportive. Each day this week you can put in a different identity...

journal

Happy Monday Reader, here is your journal prompt for the week: Where has my thinking been too narrow? How can I expand how I am viewing this? What alternate options are there? Frequently when we try and problem solve, we don’t expand our thinking wide enough. We get stuck in what we are used to or can imagine. But often the answer sits in something we don’t even know or recognize. This week we are going to try to expand our mind to find solutions. Start with creating a list of problems you...

woman lying on bed stressed out

Hi Reader, recently the biggest question I have been getting is how to control the stress and overwhelm from everything that is going on in the world. There is a lot going, and even if you aren't paying attention to the news, you are most likely still picking up the energy. Especially if you are an empath or highly sensitive. The problem with this? It creates more stress for your body to deal with. And that stress that you're holding on to... could be affecting your body, mind and spirit in...
