Hi Reader,
This week I want to explore the Fifth agreement of Don Miguel Ruiz, specifically how we are lying to ourselves. We will use this quote to go from.
“Believing yourself is one of the worst things you can do because you’ve been telling yourself lies your whole life, and if you believe all those lies, that’s why your dream isn’t a pleasant dream.” - Don Miguel Ruiz, page 107,
The Fifth Agreement
The entire chapter is about how we need to have skepticism about what we hear and believe. Not just from those around us, but from ourselves. We lie to ourselves on a regular basis. All those beliefs we have about ourselves are not always true.
In the book he uses the examples:
I’m fat
I’m ugly
I’m a loser
I’m not good enough
I’m not strong enough
But really the list can go on and on. We accumulate these beliefs about ourselves from the day we are born. And often don’t go back and really look at them.
We continue to lie to ourselves about who we really are. But it’s not from your lack of trying. The issue with the lies we tell ourselves, is we can’t see them. And without seeing them it is hard to work on them.
So first, let’s pick something you are stuck on and frustrated with. Use this as your item to work on uncovering lies about yourself. Having a specific issue to focus on will help you narrow in on one lie, versus trying to uncover them all.
Now that you have the issue you are stuck on, let’s look for where you may be lying to yourself.
Here are three tools you can use to explore this:
Ask for Help
Because this is difficult, you may want to bring in outside help. You can do this a couple of ways. First, work with a therapist or coach. When you work with a professional, they have no bias that your friends or family might. They can ask you questions without needing a specific outcome.
Second, you can ask your friends or family for insight. How to do this in a way that is constructive and helps remove their need for an outcome?
Ask more than one person and have a set of specific questions you ask all of them. I have done this many times over the years. I first learned about it from Perry Marshall while working on business marketing.
I am going to give you his exact directions on what to send. You can use this to adapt it for whatever you are working on.
"I'm taking a Perry Marshall training course. He gave me an assignment. Would you take a few minutes and tell me: What do you see as my Unique Capability? What do I naturally do better than most other people? I need a reply within 3 days.”
So, your adaptation could be:
“I’m working on some health goals with my doctor. He gave me an assignment. Would you take a few minutes and tell me: What do you think of when you think about my discipline? What do you think would be good exercise for me? What do you think might be the best way for me to manage my sugar intake? I need a reply within 3 days.”
Try and keep the questions broad and open-ended so you can receive information you never would have expected.
This can be a scary process to put yourself out there like this, but the feedback you get will be worth it. Still scared? Try just one person you trust. Then another person. Keep going until you feel more confident.
How many to send this to? Perry said to go for 15 people, to get a wide view. However, I have gotten good results with 10 people. Much less and you won’t get a broad enough overview, which means you might miss nuances of other people’s wants for you.
Journal
Journaling is a great way to uncover what may be hiding and sort through beliefs. A great way to uncover your own lies to yourself is to use the Why Ladder.
The basic idea is to keep asking yourself why until you get to the truth. So, you could start with a belief and then ask yourself why you believe it. Then keep going. You can learn more about this technique and others here: https://andreabelzer.com/journaling-techniques/
Here are three more journal prompts to help you get started:
- What am I telling myself that isn’t true?
- When I think of a solution to a problem, what is my “yeah but”? Why do I think this?
- Write down something you tell yourself often and ask – why do I say this?
Ask Your Guides/Higher Source
Similar to asking other people but this time you are asking your spiritual connections. This is the ultimate in unbiased advice! 😊
You can even ask broader questions than what am I lying to myself about. Here are a couple things you can ask:
What do I need to see differently?
What am I not seeing?
What opinion of myself needs changed?
How you get answers will be unique to you and your guide’s connection style. A couple of my favorite ways are freewriting, oracle/tarot cards or channeling. You can learn more about getting spiritual guidance here: https://andreabelzer.com/how-to-get-spiritual-guidance/
Remember seeing yourself differently takes time. You may have to do the above steps a few times, to start to see what beliefs about yourself haven’t been true. Keep at it, and you will get there!
New Content This Week
🧘♂️ Deep Energy Clearing Guided Meditation - in this meditation we do a complete reset. It includes: balancing your chakras, removing others energy from you, calling your energy back, a deeper clearing with one person that includes a cord cutting, then we end with protection from picking up more. All this is infused with Reiki and includes about 10 minutes at the end to relax and absorb that energy.
Have a great weekend,
Andrea
